He joined the Grenadier Guards in 1978 after gaining a degree in Land Economy at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He served with them all over the world and commanded the 1st Battalion in 1993-1995, during which time he was awarded the OBE. He was later Regimental Lieutenant Colonel and, until 2017, a Regimental Trustee. After leaving the Army he returned to Cornwall to run the Bolitho Estates on behalf of the wider family. Based in West Cornwall, these businesses rent out, renovate and develop farms, commercial and residential properties with a strong conservation ethos, seeking to retain and strengthen local communities and businesses. They also manage various leisure activities including Trewidden Garden and Trengwainton Garden (in partnership with the National Trust). Colonel Edward Bolitho was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in September 2011. Although closely involved in rural affairs and passionately interested in Cornwall, since becoming Lord-Lieutenant he has become further involved in a wide range of business and voluntary sector organisations. He has an official role in more than 40 organisations and is involved with many more. The Lord Lieutenant has been a good friend to the WI over the years. He will tell us about his role and perhaps will also have some stories for us about attending King Charles III’s Coronation. Lesley Smith has been the Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire since 2000. She is a medical historian holding an M.Phil in Tudor medicine, is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and is also a Member of the Society of Medical Writers. In addition to these qualifications, Lesley was awarded an Honorary Masters Degree in 2010 by the University of Derby for “Services to History in the Community”, and has 38 academic publications. Lesley has also appeared in over 120 television programmes some of which have been broadcast to 38 countries. Lesley is also well known for her highly entertaining and informative costumed portrayals of a variety of historical characters, which she gives both at the Castle and across the UK (and beyond).
